Perl Classic v0.67 with CTRA

If you like this mod, please vote for it!

What Perl Classic is:
Perl Classic Unit Frames is a complete rewrite of the original mods by Perl. As you will notice it looks very similar to the originals. It has been a high priority to maintain the look and feel while expanding functionality. The mod has been recoded for performance and is built around the Blizzard UI usage of events.

What Perl Classic is not:
Perl Classic Unit Frames is not a remake of Nymbia's Perl, AcePerl, or X-Perl. It is a heavily modified version of the original Perl and you would be hard-pressed to find anything from the original left besides the XML (which provides the look and feel).

Why people choose Perl Classic:
Perl Classic was written with endgame raiding in mind. The raiding environment is filled with all the video and game lag that can possibly be thrown at the player. Due to this demanding environment, Perl Classic was written to operate off basic game events instead of custom made detection methods. In English, Perl Classic provides basic game information in a clean and easy to read format.

The home of the original Perl mod can be found here: http://www.toomanyalts.com/?page_id=6

Q&A
-----
Q: I'm seeing double party buffs for some reason, what gives?
A: 99% of the time this is caused by CT_PartyBuffs. Simply remove the mod and you will return to having one set of party buffs.

Q: I am having massive dead spots for clicking on some of the unit frames, what's wrong?
A: This can be caused by a number of mods, but the most common seems to be CT_MovableParty. Please remove this mod as Perl can be moved without the use of this mod.

Q: The default party frames are showing up with red lightning bolts. What's going on?
A: As of version 1.503 of CT_RaidAssist this should no longer be caused by CTRA. The settings for this are now located in the WoW settings under Interface Options -> Basic -> Raid -> Hide Party Interface.

Q: Do you support ArcaneBar?
A: Yes, it is available as a separate download on Curse's website located here: http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=2257

Q: What happened to the buffs below the player frame?
A: As of Version 0.76 support for this mod has been discontinued. It was in dire need of a full recode and there is already a mod that does everything and more. I highly recommend you check out Satrina Buff Frame as a replacement and improvement to this mod. It can be found here: http://ui.worldofwar.net/ui.php?id=1503

Q: I just switched from Nymbia's, where are my party pets and raid frames?
A: They are both also available as separate downloads on Curse's website located here: http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=2257

Q: Why didn't you just include these extra Perl mods into the main package?
A: Due to their OnUpdate and/or optional nature, the possibility of lag is just too great in any situation that is already by nature (raids, ae fights). These mods are available due to their popularity, but I cannot promise good performance from them when used alongside a big list of other mods.

Q: The scaling is all messed up! What do i do?
A: I recommend setting the scale to that of the UI if you are having issues. Open the options menu via "/perl" or the Black Pearl icon on the minimap and set the scale accordingly.

Q: I am having an issue not listed in this FAQ, what can I do?
A: First, update *every* mod. I do not support ancient outdated and unmaintained mods. If you have double checked that everything is up to date, post on any of the Perl Classic mod pages and I'll be glad to help you narrow down the issue or give suggestions to help find a solution.

Q: Can you add this feature?
A: I'm sure it's possible, but the primary purpose of this mod is to 'modernize' the original Perl mod so that it doesn't slow your game down.

Installation Guide

  1. Exit "World of Warcraft" completely
  2. Download the mod you want to install
    • Make a folder on your desktop called "My Mods"
    • Save the .zip/.rar files to this folder.
    • If, when you try to download the file, it automatically "opens" it... you need to RIGHT click on the link and "save as..." or "Save Target As".
  3. Extract the file - commonly known as 'unzipping'
Do this ONE FILE AT A TIME!
    • Windows
      • Windows XP a built in ZIP extractor. Double click on the file to open it, inside should be the file or folders needed. Copy these outside to the "My Mods" folder.
      • WinRAR: Right click the file, select "Extract Here"
      • WinZip: You MUST make sure the option to "Use Folder Names" is CHECKED or it will just extract the files and not make the proper folders how the Authors designed
    • Mac Users
      • StuffitExpander: Double click the archive to extract it to a folder in the current directory.
  4. Verify your WoW Installation Path
That is where you are running WoW from and THAT is where you need to install your mods.
  5. Move to the Addon folder
    • Open your World of Warcraft folder. (default is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\)
    • Go into the "Interface" folder.
    • Go into the "AddOns" folder.
    • In a new window, open the "My Mods" folder.
    • The "My Mods" folder should have the "Addonname" folder in it.
    • Move the "Addonname" folder into the "AddOns" folder
  6. Start World of Warcraft
  7. Make sure AddOns are installed
    • At the Character Select screen, look in lower left corner for the "addons" button.
    • If button is there: make sure all the mods you installed are listed and make sure "load out of date addons" is checked.
    • If the button is NOT there: means you did not install the addons properly. Look at the above screenshots. Try repeating the steps or getting someone who knows more about computers than you do to help.

Translations

When you download a mod, please be sure that the mod is compatible with your translation of wow. Some mods only work on the US versions, while some only work on some of the various European versions. These variations are called "Localizations".

TOC Numbers (Out of Date Mods)

When Blizzard patches WoW, they change the Interface number. This means that all mods will be "out of date" unless or until the author releases a new version for that interface. Some people go into the .toc files and update the numbers themselves, but this is STRONGLY advised against as it will cause problems locating possible incompatibilities addons. When you log into WoW after a patch, you DO NOT have to delete your interface directory. All you have to do is simply tell WoW to ignore the interface numbers and load all the mods anyway. All you have to do is, while at the "character select" screen, look in the lower left corner and click on the "addons" button. A window will pop up listing all your installed mods.

If you look in the upper left corner of that window there should be a box that says "Load Out of Date AddOns". You want to CHECK this box. Now simply go into WoW normally and all your mods should load. As of the 1.9 patch, you will have to do this after EVERY patch/update that Blizzard posts! If you encounter any problems with a mod after a patch, please be sure to let the author of the mod know so they can fix it.

Mac Support

WoW addons are not platformed based. As such, they can be used on either Mac or PC. You can extract both .zip and .rar files on a Mac using StuffitExpander.

Hey Global, love the mod.

Is there any way to break up party members? I.E. in a square instead of vertical or horizontal?

Thanks!

In the new version the Target of Target frame is showing up above the Target frame. This is not really a problem in itself, but when you have a Raid Icon on the Target, and the Target of Target frame next to it, it is. This causes the Target of Target frame to hide the Raid Icon, since the Target of Target frame is placed above it as well.

It didn't use to be this way in the older versions, but now it is. Hope you understand :)

To reproduce it, just place the Target of Target frame to the right of the Target frame and put a Raid Icon on the target.

Is there any way to turn off the numbers that show time left on the target's buffs/debuffs but keep the shading that shows time left on? The numbers make it hard to see what the actual buff/debuff is.

@emjaycue: This sounds like some other mod that you are using is re enabling the blizzard target frame. If you run Perl Classic alone you will see that the issue is not on Perl's side.

@Saxxonknight: This issue was resolved as far as I know on my end in 2.09. Many mods are still in the process of updating all the undocumented changes of 2.2, so it may take some time and updating to resolve itself.

I also get an error when mousing over party members at times. I also do not see the tooltip with their name, class & location like normally used to show up. Might be related.

I have been having a problem where the default "Player Target" frame shows up on top of my Perl Target frame (except the default player target frame won't have a portrait picture). Does anyone know why the default "Player Target" frame is also showing up and why it isn't being hidden by Perl?

All my other Perl frames replace the default frames (e.g. Player, Party, Pet, etc. It's just the Target frame that's messed up.)

@bonejangle: Like i said in my previous comments, I don't do Perl_Raid anymore and just need to update the faq to reflect that. X-Perl does do them, and the raid portion (or the entire mod) can be run side by side with Perl Classic.

@Maho: Update to 2.09 and that error should go away.

@Lombra: Regarding the level color "bug". This is actually intentional. I don't distinguish between friend and foe on the level color, thats where the faction icon and name color come into play. I don't have any plans to change how level coloring is handled. As far as Perl_Raid is concerned, I won't be coding that mod ever. I gave it my best attempt when 2.0 launched and decided after many wasted hours that it simply wasn't worth the time. If you want to use Perl styled raid frames, X-Perl has maintained and added many nice features to his copy of them (which looks exactly like mine and Nymbia's) so it should be what you're looking for. You can also just use those parts of X-Perl alongside Perl Classic if you wish to do so as well.

@GroundCon: No plans to do that in the current 2.x branch, but I will definitely consider this for 3.x. If you would, please submit it as a feature request using the ticket system here please.

@jzmagic: Turn on the "Combat Text" option under the player or target frames.

@NanoWarrior: Because Perl_Raid is no longer made by me and not part of this package. Apparently, I just like to slack on updating the FAQ above.

Hello,

I've been messing with various unit frame mods, but I always returned to Perl Classic. It simply fits my needs best.

One thing I would really like to see in a future version: Make an option to display hp/mp figures in an abbreviated manner (aguf style). Especially when I target a raid boss, I would prefer to see something like 2.53M instead of a 7-digit number, which is an estimate anyway. But please make this an option that can be toggled. :)

Other than that, I have nothing to complain about. Keep up your good work!

Regards

One thing that I noticed in previous versions (did not check this on the latest release) is that the level on the target frame is written in "difficulty level colours" even when you have friendly or neutral targets selected, as opposed to the brown/yellowish colour in the default UI. Sounds easy enough to fix (but then again, maybe it is already?).

Also.. just gotta ask, how does the plans for Perl Raid look? Are you, in fact, planning to or even working on getting it done or is it more like something you may consider to do at some point in the future? Or is it even abandonded completely?

Thanks
